I have not been able to get out for a night hunt yet. When scouting I have seen alot flying but very high. I also have only been hunting the big water, I may try some night hunts this weekend in back water swamps just to change things up. last saterday I was on the lower part of the big rideau and did't have very good luck, not much flying. one blue bill.

Morning, night hunts are to much hasle I think, the birds fly just before dark and Im always worried about shooting time. Plus I never see as many birds. Then you have to pick up in the dark and if you do get any birds, you have to clean them in the dark. Dinner is always cold when I get home, still have to clean the gun and put away my gear. then its time for bed! But if you say you want to hunt the back ponds (swamps), it might be a roost and well worth the head-aches! But a roost is also good in the morning if you hunt the flyway and dont scare out the birds! Just my opinion!

I used to hunt with a guy that always said.. When I go I go for the full day.....

So for me it's a habit to stay as long as I can.. but I'm am finding that I'm quiting around noon especially in September because it's so darn hot now.

We finished at 1pm the other weekend because we had six birds sitting in what felt like 35 deg. I was concerned with them turning on us.

Later in the year is ok becuase it's dark at 5 so I will stay until dark but I ussually see more in the morning.

I spend a lot of time scouting, so I usually do very well whether it is the morning or night. Spend some gas , get a pair of good binoculars and your dog will thank you for the time you spent.

Darcy,

We may not be geeting the push of northen birds comming down but what ever birds are down are using the same roostings ponds.

Last night I sat in a lawn chair in my hay field and watched as flock after flock of geese flew over me all within shooting range. My 5 yrold son was trying to convince me to go get my gun.....I was just to lazy to have to clean them after.

To funny Eric, because I feel the same way sometimes, but true! Freeze a couple for training your dog, just a  :icon1_lol:

Eric B, that would be a nice position to be in. My area is so inconsistent that you gotta takem when you can LOL!

My pup has been out 4 times and hasn't had a single retrieve :(

I'm afraid that she's not gonna want anything to do with me taking her hunting if I don't get her on birds soon :|

When I come back from holidays. I'm going to track down a boat for duck hunting.. and head back to hunting water. Hopefully I'll do better and she can see what it's all about LOL!

Greg, Field hunting is ok, but nothing,,,nothing,, is more rewarding then watching the sun come up over a well placed set of coys in a river setting. The early sound of a bird splashing into your set up or the whistle of a flock of teal racing across the front of your blind, and the look on your dogs face when you dont shoot! these things cant be found in the field! My opinion!
